February in Minnesota traditionally means brutally cold temperatures and a barren landscape draped in every shade of white, brown and grey. Inevitably, this time of year leaves me longing for the rich bright colors of spring and summer and the smell of anything other than car exhaust. In my home studio I have grow lights coaxing newly planted seeds to come forth as the seedlings of our future summer meals. The smell of wet soil and tender green shoots and the warmth of artificial sunlight fill the room and inspire me to bring that soul nurturing goodness to my canvas. In a year where I’ve promised to manufacture my own joy even when it feels impossible, “Embracing the February Blues” is a reminder that even in the bleakest of times all of us are capable of finding happiness and inspiration.
